Malocclusion is the condition of having uneven teeth because the dental arches do not meet properly. Most people have some degree of malocclusion, but do not need treatment. Others have severely uneven teeth that risk dental diseases because of food particles getting caught in between. This condition is commonly due to thumb, finger, or pacifier sucking in early childhood; skeletal discrepancy in the jaws is a less common cause. Neutrocclusion, or Class I Malocclusion, is very common; the occlusion (direction of the dental arches) is normal, but the teeth have spacing, crowding, or alignment problems. This may involve abnormal eruption of some teeth or impacted wisdom teeth. Some people have teeth that erupt labially. This means they are at the level of the lips rather than along the arch. Crowding may be because of impacted wisdom teeth. This is when wisdom teeth grow horizontally rather than vertically like all the other teeth. Distocclusion, also known as retrognathism, is Class II Malocclusion in which some molars’ cusps do not fit together very well. Molars between the upper and lower jaw appear to be protruding over the others or overlapping. This may also be caused by crowding because of wisdom teeth. Type III Malocclusion is known as mesiocclusion or prognathism. This is characterized by lower front teeth being more prominent than the upper front teeth. This happens when the maxillary bone (upper jaw) is large or if the mandible (lower jaw) is rather small. Braces are the common treatment for malocclusion. Adolescents and older children normally get braces to have straight, even teeth by adulthood though there are braces for adults too. These braces Tucson may be worn for 18 months to 3 years. Wearing braces can be uncomfortable and even painful, but this wears off after a few weeks; duration of treatment depends on the initial condition of the teeth. Chewing gum can reduce pain and stimulate healing from the increase in blood flow, but the gum might stick to the braces Tucson. Alternatively, using mouth rinse can help relieve mouth sores caused by the braces. When the teeth have been realigned, the braces Tucson may be removed. The patient shall wear retainers that may either be made of wire or plastic. Retainers are removable, but should be worn for as long as possible during the day except when eating.
