Mediumship Skills A medium is a person who has developed their psychic skills in a particular direction. Their skills include the ability to communicate with spirits. A medium is able to experience the thoughts and voices of these spirits and communicate with them on a psychic level. Their mediumship skills allow them to be in tune with the psychic vibrations that the spirits create and that other people will not be able to directly engage with on a meaningful or helpful level. Mediumship is complicated because a medium is opening up to an unpredictable psychic energy. Some mediums do this while fully conscious other will go into a trance like state in order to help them cope with the levels of energy involved. Mediumship engages the intuitive and subconscious mind, not the conscious, logical mind. Some people are more naturally drawn to mediumship than others. Some find that they have the skills from a young age and have to learn to control them. Others have to start from the beginning and learn to bring their previously hidden skills to the forefront. With help and training from experienced mediums a medium can develop specific skills. These include: • Clairvoyants: Seeing objects, people, spirits or events with the mind’s eye. • Clairsentience: Receiving information through connection with spirits. • Clairaudient: Experiencing sounds the spiritual realm. (This may include speech). • Clairempathy: Sensing the emotions of another person. • Clairgustance: Experience a substance through taste via a spirit. • Clairscent: Experience the smell of something coming from the spirit realm. • Clairtangency: Perceive information about an object and/or its owner through touch. All of the above skills are common among mediums. Some practice them all, others are particularly skilled in one area and specialise in it. All of the skills take years to master and control. Because of their very nature they can be hard to control. Even if a medium is naturally efficient at making a connection it can take a long time to learn how to put their experience into words and explain it to other people. The skills listed above all utilize the power of the mind. Some mediums practice physical mediumship. Here the body of the medium is used to communicate with spirits. A particularly well known form is called channelling. The medium that practices channelling is said to leave their body and is possessed by a spirit who can then talk and communicate using the mediums body as a vessel. The voice and mannerisms of the medium may disappear and be replaced by those of the spirit. Another form of physical medium skill is the trance, where the medium will enter into a trance state to communicate with the other side.
