There’s been quite a thriving with excelling horses, the races have almost never been a disappointing array of runners, come what may, the race day has always witnessed one or the other, favourite or non-favourite making a run for the wire like never before startling everyone else on the way. While his immediate sire and dam weren’t much of persistent performers with dam Oatsee being primarily a broodsmare and sire Forestry having a short racing career himself, it’s only the damsire Unbridled or up that you witness opulence in career winnings and finishes with Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer comprising his royal bloodline. Shackleford hasn’t made a very impressive line of finishes, with only 2 wins this season and 3 out of 10 career starts, there much to be proven by the beast. As a three year old, the maiden run for the season was an allowance race conducted on February 5th, at Gulfstream Park. The 1 1/8 mile distance was raced over by the fiery beast with Jesus Castanon and well closed in a win. His next run again at Gulfstream didn’t really bring much out of his performance with him closing a 5th to race winner Soldat. Shakleford’s next entered theFlorida Derby, the event taking place at Gulfstream again. Running the lead just like his style permitted, he had almost a 14 lengths lead to his co-favourite for the Kentucky, Dialed In. Shackleford raced in the front with To Honor and Serve stalking right behind and Dialed In gearing up and working towards lowering the difference. It was 3 strides right before the wire that the rival Dialed In equalled him and won by a head. The Kentucky Derby observed a fourth finish from the star, the trend always catching Shackleford, him running out of gas by the time he reaches the wire. Preakness witnessed a more determined Shackleford, the lead and Flashpoint, fellow-lead had slowed down the pace in the backstretch but as they approached the home stretch, Shackleford accelerated upon being whipped by Castanon and prevailed on a win by half a length on Derby winner Animal Kingdom. The Belmont Stakes again saw the fading off Shackleford, the lead towards the home stretch was overtaken by race winner Ruler on Ice, Stay Thirsty along with Nehro and Brilliant Speed.
