When talking about mast photography, one generally refers to ground based aerial photography or elevated photography or even telescopic pole photography. Since it is actually a kind of aerial photography, the photographers using this system are able to capture images from a higher level or from a higher altitude which normal man is unable to witness under normal circumstances. From experts in this field it has been found that a mast photography system consists chiefly of four main components. These are a digital camera of high resolution, telescoping mast, a pan or tilt head operated by remote control and a ground control unit. The telescoping masts that form a major part in this system can be found in many sizes ranging widely from 30' to 100' and over. They can be put into action either mechanically or even pneumatically. Masts activated mechanically need an electric winch of 12 volt and a series of simple pulleys to operate. On the other hand pneumatic systems, in order to put pressure on the interior of the mast, require a hand pump which helps the mast to rise. In case of portability of these masts, masts can be easily transported from one place to another by mounting them on specialized trailer. Setting up this system does not require much time. In other cases, apart from the trailer mounted system, masts can also be mounted on vans or big cars for their transport. Photography aerial or aerial photography does not, however, score over mast photography. The latter is an excellent alternative to the former because it is logistically simpler, less expensive and environment friendly. In some cases where aerial photographers make use of telescopic or zoom lenses to capture images like that of individual edifices or other specific landmarks, the same work can be done easily with 73 ft/22.5 m telescopic mast.
