"> One of the oldest in Hyderabad and one of the largest in India, the all granite Mecca Masjid Hyderabad was started during the rule of Muhammad Quli Qutub shah, around 1617 and completed by Emperor Aurangzeb in 1694. The hall of prayer of the mosque is around 220 feet wide, 180 feet long and 75 feet high, with a capacity to hold ten thousand worshippers, an edifice on a monumental scale. It comprises fifteen arches to support the roof of the building on three sides and a sheer wall to support the mehrab, a decorative niche that indicates the direction of Mecca, on the fourth side. As with other buildings of the period the mosque was also built out of granite. The most stupendous aspect of it creation was that the fifteen arches on the façade were carved from a solitary piece of granite. It is no surprise therefore that it took five years to quarry this huge piece of granite and more than 8,000 workers had to be engaged for the construction of the mosque. In spite of its huge size, the mosque is an elegant piece of work with architectural details and decorations characteristic of the time. Inscriptions from the Quran form decorative friezes over many of the doors and arches. The domes on the circular corner minars had not been on the original plans and were instead added on by the Mughals who completed the structure. As the most important building in Hyderabad during the 17th century, the city had been planned around it. The huge pond and fountains in the courtyard at the entrance adds a pleasant touch and provides a respite from the heat. A room in this courtyard is believed to hold a hair of the Prophet Mohammed. The marble covered graves of the Asaf Jahi rulers are in a canopied building to the left of the Masjid. It is said that bricks made from soil from Mecca, Islam’s first holy place, was inserted into the central arch of the building giving it the name that has come down through the ages. It is also said that the Masjid has been modeled on the Great Mosque in Mecca.
