At one point or another, just about every person who owns a home is going to have to deal with problems or issues with their well pump, and these problems may be extensive enough that well pump replacement becomes necessary. Unfortunately, though, well pump replacement can be extremely expensive, time-consuming, inconvenient, and difficult. If you're at the point where you're planning well pump replacement, chances are that you've already invested a fair amount of money in paying someone to examine your well and your well pump in order to determine that your well pump indeed needs replacing. Then if you find out from this examination that your well pump needs to be replaced, you're looking at shelling out a whole lot more money. The well pump itself will most likely be extremely expensive, but on top of that, paying someone to remove the old well pump and install the new one will likely cost a great deal of money as well. For this reason, many people faced with the necessity of well pump replacement are highly motivated to somehow complete the well pump replacement by themselves. This can end up saving you a significant amount of money, so it's definitely an option worth exploring if you consider yourself even slightly handy. For the purposes of this discussion, let's assume that this will be a submersible well pump replacement. First and foremost, your well pump replacement will require some basic tools and equipment. Besides the new replacement well pump, you'll need some sanitation liquid, adjustable socket wrenches, and a winch for any submersible pumps that may be further down in the well and beyond your reach. Once you've assembled the necessary tools and equipment, the next step in your well pump replacement will be to open the well cap. Your well cap, like most well caps, is probably being held in place by some hex nuts. You should be able to use your socket wrench to remove the hex nuts and then lift up the well cap, so that you can then get to the well casing and the well pump itself. Once you've accessed the well casing, the next thing you're going to do for your well pump replacement is to remove the current/old well pump. If your well is not extremely deep, it may be possible for you to manually pull out the whole pump by yourself. Nonetheless, it's still a good idea to use a winch if possible. Using a winch can help ensure that neither yourself nor the well is damaged in any way. As soon as you have taken the old well pump out of the well casing, the next step in your well pump replacement is to take the discharge line off of the well pump mechanism. At this point, the old well pump should be completely gone, and you should be ready to install the new well pump. Obviously, the specific steps involved with installing the new pump will depend partly on the specific pump you buy, but you'll almost certainly receive installation instructions along with the pump when you purchase it, so just follow the instructions given and you should be just fine. And basically, that's all you need to do in order to complete a well pump replacement.
