Being a teacher of English at the time, I found it interesting enough that I was asked to attend a school trip to the Science Museum accompanied by almost exclusively science-faculty staff. I later found out that it was due to short staffing, plus the fact that I let slip that I love that place so much probably had a part to play in the decision to bring me along. Nonetheless, I was overjoyed at the prospect of revisiting one of my favourite childhood places of all time. Entering the museum immediately brought back a tide of these memories from exhibits that have been there for longer than two decades: the Boeing 747 landing gear, Stephenson’s Rocket and the enormous industrial revolution-era steam engines in the entrance lobby. I was particularly delighted about the fact that the museum has since chosen not to levy an entrance fee, even to large school parties such as ours. It’s a great age we live in today, where knowledge is so generously accessible for everyone. I’d say the biggest disappointment for me about the trip was knowing that I would have to go home afterwards, being unable to go and visit the other great museums of London. Perhaps one day I would take the initiative to find a flat London rent short term and be able to truly take in the wealth of knowledge these great museums have to offer at my own pace. The children particularly enjoyed the biological exhibits, as a large proportion of them were actually looking to take on AS Level biology, which is a pleasant surprise. Even as a member of the faculty of humanities, I was pleased to see such enthusiasm for the exhibits on display. Having attended a number of school trips similar to this one, I can definitely say that I have never witness such good behaviour on a school trip; most of the time the kids would be running amok, bashing buttons, knocking into the glass cabinets and being silly in the gift shop. In the future, I will definitely rent a holiday apartment in London.
