Celebrated by Hindus, the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi also called Vinayak Chaturthi, marks the birthday of the elephant headed god Ganesha, the son of Parvathi and Shiva. Ganesha is believed to be the deity of good fortune, wisdom and prosperity and his birthday is celebrated by Hindus all over the world in the Hindu month of Bhadra, between mid August and mid September each year, over a period of 10 days. Some months prior to the festival, clay models of Ganesha in varying sizes are made and on the day of the festivities they are enshrined in homes and in heavily decorated temporary structures in public places. Priests clad in traditional red and gold costumes chant mantras to give life to the statues which are worshipped in sixteen traditional ways with offerings of coconut, jaggery, red flowers and various other traditional offerings. The statues are also anointed with a red paste made from sandalwood. Throughout the ceremony Vedic hymns from ancient texts are chanted. For ten days during the festival the statues are assiduously worshipped. On the eleventh day they are taken in a procession accompanied by singing and dancing devotees and immersed in the sea or a river to symbolize seeing the god off to Kailas, the abode of the gods, taking the sins of humanity along with him. Since this festival is hugely popular with the public it is also an opportunity to showcase cultural activities like local singing and dance performances. Charitable activities to benefit the poor are also organized by many communities during this period. Traditional sweets such as modak and karanji, rice flour dumplings with coconut, jaggery and dried fruit are made as offerings to the god. The popularity of the festival is believed to have spawned entire communities such as artisans and builders who are totally devoted to making statues and other paraphernalia used for the ceremonies.
