Angioplasty is a comprehensive curative to remove artery blockage. It is not an invasive procedure and doesn’t even take long to be performed. Interventional cardiologists perform this procedure. People who atherosclerosis undergo angioplasty. High cholesterol level results in blockage of arteries. The fatty substance generates a plaque sort of a thing that develops on artery walls. This plaque restricts the flow of blood into the arteries affecting proper functioning of the heart. Obstruction in blood flow causes chest pain and if the pain is untreated, the blood clot may cause a heart attack! X-ray, urine culture test, blood culture test and ECG are conducted for patients to undergo angioplasty. Sometimes the procedure may not be suitable for patients. If the blocked areas are naturally narrow or if a number of vessels branching out from the artery then angioplasty is not recommended. Invasive coronary artery bypass surgery is recommended in such cases. Angioplasty involves opening up of blocked arteries to let blood flow unobstructed. A tube is made to penetrate and a balloon is affixed at the end of the tube which is inflated to push open the walls of the artery. The blocked artery is opened temporarily through this procedure. Sometimes, the plaque is disintegrated with the sudden air flow that is released through the balloon into the tube. After this the balloon is drawn away to leave the area open and a stent is implanted to make sure that the artery is open and the blood flow is unobstructed. The more the number of blocked areas, the more time the entire process will take. The patients are made to relax using sedatives. Intravenous medication is provided to aid patient’s recovery. The movement of the tube (catheter) is observed through X-ray. A post-procedure taking care is extremely important. Also, the patients have to avoid intaking any kind of food item for a few hours prior to the treatment. After the treatment, one has to take care of one’s health. Platlet blocking medications are given to the patients to avoid clotting of blood near the implanted stent. Both angioplasty and angiography are sophisticated procedures which have to be done by good cardiologists. Cardiology in India is really coming up and is developing fast.
