When working with sinks that are not able to drain water effectively you may need to install utility sink pumps. One reason you would need to install utility sink pumps is that you need to move the water against gravity due to a lack of a drain. Another reason might be having a sink in the basement that has a tendency to flood during particular times. In addition to basement sinks, utility sink pumps might also be used in conjunction with a laundry room or as part of a bar. Utility sink pumps are a far less expensive alternative to redoing the entire plumbing in the basement to accommodate one sink. Utility sink pumps are available in either manual or automatic. A manual sink pump unit needs to be triggered by flipping a switch, which will start the pump and remove the excess water. Fully automatic utility sink pumps rely on some type of sensor which will automatically switch the pump on when there is excess water inside of the sink. While they can be more expensive than a manual pump, the convenience of not needing to remember to turn the pump on and off every time you use the sink can make a fully automatic sink pump an attractive option to consider. Since utility sink pumps are available in a variety of sizes, there are different ways in which they can be stored when they are installed. Many of these sink pumps can be hidden underneath the counter so they are not readily visible. Still other types of utility sink pumps are known as under-mount sink pumps and can be attached directly underneath the sink. Whether the sink pump unit is installed under the counter, off to the side, or attached to the sink itself will depend greatly on the space available to you as well as the setup of your sink. Take into account the amount of free space underneath the sink and in the counters so you can use the measurements to inform your decision on which model of utility sink pumps is best for your needs. While installing utility sink pumps you should also consider how you intend to filter the water heading to the pump. Debris can clog up pipes and the pump unit itself, causing potential damage or flooding. Installing a trap in the pipes is an option as well as purchasing a designated filter to complement the sink pump. A thriftier but possibly more risky option could even be to use a nylon sock to filter the water into the pump and discarding it when it is full. Utility sink pumps are a necessary addition to many sinks that do not have adequate drainage options available. A laundry utility sink in the basement, a wet bar sink that is used for excess ice and rinsing glasses, or any other type or sink that is installed in the basement are all examples of instances when you may need a utility sink pump installed. Your local home improvement store can help you consider your options and guide you to the best pump unit that will fit your current setup and water needs.
