Installing utility sinks in the basement often require an additional installation of utility sink pumps to handle the drainage of waste water. Many sinks installed in the basement do not have drains readily available and would require new plumbing to be put in if it were not for utility sink pumps. With sewer or septic drain lines usually running above the basement, the utility sink pumps push the water against the forces of gravity into the drainage system so that the waste can be removed. The removal of this excess water without the expense of installing new plumbing and the prevention of flooding from allowing the water to drain inadequately are the two primary benefits of utility sink pumps. There are three prevalent locations to install utility sink pumps that are dependant largely upon the amount of space available to you in and around the sink. Larger sink pumps that hold more water and are more powerful than other models will likely not be able to fit anywhere aside from off to the side unless special consideration or construction is done to accommodate the larger pump unit. Smaller utility sink pumps can easily be installed underneath counters to get them out of sight and freeing up more floor space. Instead of stashing the sink pump underneath the counter, some pump units are designed to be mounted directly underneath the sink itself. When you are shopping for utility sink pumps you will want to be aware of how much space you have available underneath the sink and where your ideal location to install the pump unit is. Knowing this will help you figure out which size is best suited for your needs. Utility sink pumps can either be operated manually or automatically. Manual utility sink pumps require a switch to be flipped when you want the pump to get rid of the water that has accumulated. Fully automatic sink pumps are also available which do not require manual activation for the pump to remove the excess water. Instead, a sensor tracks how much water has built up and automatically switches on the pump. While manual utility sink pumps can cost less than some versions of the automatic pumps, the added convenience of not having to remember to manually switch on the pump every time you use the sink is significant. Fully automated utility sinks are also more reliable in offering consistent performance, making them a preferred choice to manual utility sink pumps. Another feature to consider is whether the pump has a built in filtering system. If it does not, you may need to purchase a separate filter or build a trap in the pipe leading to the pump unit. When shopping for utility sink pumps, it is also advisable to look into how much installation is required if you will be handling the project yourself. Sink pumps can have varying degrees of difficulty in the installation depending on the model. Your local home improvement store can help you decide which of the utility sink pumps will be the best fit for your situation and give advice on what steps are required for proper installation as well as maintenance.
