Seborrhoeic dermatitis (also seborrheic dermatitis or seborrheic eczema) is an inflammatory skin disorder affecting the scalp, face and torso. Both infants and adults suffer from this condition. When an infant suffers from this condition it is more commonly referred to as cradle cap. This condition looks unsightly but is not contagious and NOT caused by a lack of proper hygiene, bacterial infection or allergy. Newborns and infants under three years of age usually suffer from this condition. Though it is a type of eczema it is also a temporary condition and easily rectified. Following are some of the signs that you will see in your child suffering from cradle cap: 1)It may look thick, greasy, patchy, scaly and crusty. 2)The color may be yellowish or brownish and usually appears on the scalp. 3)It may also be found on the eyebrows, eyelids, ears, nose etc. It is extremely common with about half of all children affected. It is not usually itchy and does not bother the baby. Nevertheless never be tempted to pick scales as this can lead to bleeding and in some cases, infection. Following are some of the home care methods for cradle cap. a)In order to improve the scalp and loosen the scales, gently massage your baby’s scalp with mineral oil, olive oil or Pure Baby Hair & Scalp Care. b)After several minutes comb through with a soft brush or comb to remove larger scales. c)Rinse off with warm water. d)Apply a shampoo without perfumes and dyes or use Pure Baby Conditioning Shampoo or Pure Baby Two-In-One to lift smaller tougher scales and keep scalp moisturized and hair conditioned. There is no specific reason why babies get cradle cap although many doctors think it comes from an overactive sebaceous gland producing sebum oil through the scalp.
