The invention of the “home owners association” has been a happy solution for many people. It forces people that might not otherwise be inclined, to take pride in their property and neighborhood. An HOA can help set regulations regarding pets, garbage, landscaping, and the overall appearance of the neighborhood. However, if you happen to live in a neighborhood with a lazy or negligent HOA president, you may feel as though the money you pay toward association dues is, well, money down the drain. If you are one of these helpless folk, I feel your pain. The townhomes that my family and I currently live in were once run by an inefficient and absent HOA president. She wasn’t completely neglectful, but she definitely let things slide because she didn’t live here and didn’t see things that she should’ve been on top of. The winter snow removal company and the summer landscaping company were sub-par at best. The playground lacked trees and benches, and the lack of recycling dumpsters in the neighborhood was very frustrating. However, there was hope. We got a new HOA president, and she started whipping things into shape. She fired the companies that didn’t do their job and hired new ones, including, a professional management company that helps run HOA’s and process dues. It took a few months, but she got things running nicely, again. If you are in this situation, my suggestion to you is, vote in a new president, or request to the old one some simple changes that could benefit everyone. Maybe search for a local management group to help, like, if you live in Southern California, an Orange County Home Owners Association company to help your president out with some guidelines and tips. Most of all, don’t give up, you can make a difference.
