Before You Redesign Your Web Site

Website Design,Internet,E-Commerce
It is a familiar story. Your Internet site was designed round the time when a pretender named Google was just getting their foot in the door of the Search Site market. At the time, it's a great Internet site. It may have had some cool new features like some JavaScript rollovers or perhaps even some Flash. It is time to revamp. Define Precisely what you need from your new Site and be pragmatic. An Internet site revamp project can be as large or small as you would like it to be. Some times the written content could be fine and a freshening of the interface is all that is in order. Other times some Web applications could need to be developed to take web orders or permit members to log in. Regardless of what you decide you want, remember that everything that you do desires to achieve your businesses' fundamental goals of skyrocketing sales and keeping current consumers. Anything outside of this would possibly not be required. Also, don't be scared to do things in phases. Lots of my Site design clients do things this way as it enables them to concentrate on direct needs first. As an example, a customer could have extremely poor Search Engine listings because their old Internet site was poorly developed and their tags are no good. But they also need user forums where their customers can debate and raise questions. We'd do two phases for a project like this. The 1st would get their Internet site current with the most recent SEO methodologies, and once that's done and the Search Sites are re-indexing their pages, we're going to develop the other features that they need on their site ,eg the member forums. Select a Designer smartly. Choosing the proper Website designer is patently a massive part of your Site revamp project. Even massive companies with a creative dep. will outsource this job to an external firm lots of the time. The right Web site designer will display creativeness, but also will be responsive to the context in which their designs will be viewed. As an example, for a high-priced legal firm in Manhattan, a singing, dancing animated personality, executed in Flash, wouldn't be the only real way to go. Ensure that the Website designer has made work that fits the clients's character and vision, and not round the other way. A large amount of clients that come to my firm inquiring about a Web revamp wish to see only work that's in THEIR industry. I suspect that finding a designer that 'knows' your industry is a credible one, though a GOOD designer will put the effort and time to learn a sector. To me, it's more crucial that somebody has the sensitiveness and understanding to be in a position to work with ANY industry. Some times firms focusing on only 1 industry begin to be subject to 'tunnel vision' or doubtless even lose their creativeness altogether because they are not challenged with learning new things. Either way, taking an intensive look at a Web Designer's portfolio will tell you a lot. And you might like to call one or two references too. Don't capitulate to trends and eye candy. As a Website Designer, it's my job to stay abreast of the newest and best software, extensions, trends and design suggestions. While a number of these are good tools, with each project that I tackle, I want to ask myself : "Does this toolas cool as it looksaccomplish what the customer wants to accomplish?" Plenty of times it does, some times it does not. For example, I am probably a proponent of Flash due to the quantity of interactiveness and interest that it can add to a static Net page. Nevertheless it only works when it is utilized correctly and when it fits with the remainder of the Site. There are some instances when animation, sound or video will just NOT work. Four. Remember why you are doing it to begin with. You are redesigning your Internet site because your company wants to raise sales and keep current consumers. If each single feature of your new Website doesn't make a contribution to that, you want to rethink why it is that you're doing it. It's not sufficient to just have a facelift once in a while. A good Site revamp can be pricey and unless it is firmly making a contribution to the expansion of your company, you might simply put your selling budget to better use. The best Site redesigns are those that take a company's concepts and vision and portray it in a fashion that is alluring, easy to utilise and unusual. The features you add to your Site that actually benefit your potential customers and current shoppers are those that will pay off ten times over the long run.
