What is cancer? Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cell growth. Cancer begins with a genetic mutation, with injured genes. Cancer ills the body when damaged cells starts dividing in a uncontrolled manner in a body cell results in the formation of lumps or masses of tissue called tumors. Cancer results in the DNA mutation in the body. Because of the uncontrolled growth tumors expands in size and destroys adjacent tissues, and often metastasizes, and tumor cells spread to other locations in the body via the through the bloodstream. Tumors can grow and interfere with the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems and they can release hormones that alter body function. Tumors are of two types: • Benign Tumors- Tumors that locate at one part of the body express limited growth and does not affect the other body cells/parts. • Malignant Tumors- This is the most dangerous form of the tumor because simultaneously it starts attacking the nearby cells of the body and sometimes spreads in the whole body. Malignant tumors forms basically o When a cancerous cell starts moving throughout the body through blood or lymph systems and destroys healthy tissue. This process is called invasion o When a cell manages to divide and grow and starts making new blood vessels to feed itself in a process called angiogenesis. Causes of Cancer Cause of cancer has multiple reasons. Environmental factors are one of the major factors of about 5-10% due to genetics. Environmental factors lead to cancer cause in the disease includes Growing older, Tobacco, Sunlight, Ionizing radiation, Certain chemicals and other substances, Some viruses and bacteria, Certain hormones, Poor diet, lack of physical activity, or being overweight and Alcohol. • Chemicals- These are the substances that causes DNA mutation in the body. Mutation causing substances are called Mutagenes which are also known as Carcinogens (Cancer causing agents). • Radiation- There are some rays which are harmful the human body, mostly UV and infra Red rays comes in this category. • Hereditary- Though cancer is non-hereditary disease but primarily caused by an inherited genetic defect. • Physical Agents- One of the cause of cancer disease is physical injuries like; breaking bone resulted in bone cancer. Treatment of Cancer There are many treatments available for the cancer disease according to its availability. Some are as follows like; • Surgery • Radiation • Chemotherapy • Immunotherapy • Hormone therapy • Gene therapy As we all know, prevention is better than cure.
