More than four decades passed since the birth of Japanese animation yet it remains to make waves. It has integrated itself into people’s everyday lives, especially in Japan’s Shibuya and Harajuku district. Anime does not only affect teens and young adults, but it also impacts young kids. It is divided into five genres, the others remaining a subcategory of each. One of the bigger chunks of Japanese anime is Shojo which literally means young girl. This type of show, like the famous Sailormoon series, caters to girls ages 10 to 18. Shojo encompasses variety of topics from realism to fantasy. The common narratives tell stories about friendship between girls, rivalry, romance, and drama. Moreover, there exists a subcategory for Shoujo called Mahou shojo meaning magical girl. It covers the same narratives as Shoujo with an addition of supernatural elements. This type of anime highly focuses on human emotions and relationships. Most famous Shoujo anime movie is Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki. One noted series in this genre includes Card Captor Sakura, Ouran High School Host Club, and Full Moon Wo Sagashiite (Searching for the Full Moon). Furthermore, anime genre covering the same age range as Shojo is called Shonen. The word’s Kanji character translates to “few years” or “young person”. Shonen’s narratives are commonly action-packed with a humorous slant. As opposed to its Shojo counterpart, this genre’s plots highly characterize brotherhood, sports, army squads, and a great deal of power fighting. A young boy searching for his destiny usually leads some Shojo anime movie and series that features pretty girls accompanying the lad’s journey. Akira Toriyama, the Dragonball creator, greatly contributed to and molded the Shonen anime as people see it today. Famed animes of this kind are One Piece, Detective Conan, Yuyu Hakusho, Hunter X Hunter, and Deathnote. Lastly, there exist Kodomomuke for kids who are prohibited to see intense fighting scenes and romance. Literally, it means “intended for children”. This type of anime caters to kids nine and below. Kodomomuke does not have a continuous storyline unlike other episodic anime movie. Each episode is a complete story in itself unlike Shojo and Shonen series. Moreover, kodomomuke’s narratives talk about how a child should behave, and it usually ends in a moral lesson. Such animes are Doraemon, Hamtaro, Pretty Cure, and Damashita! Power Puff Girls Z.
