Legend goes that he made a hundred starts in his entire racing career of eight seasons; living a humble life reminiscent of the name Rags to Riches, however closer he got to fame, the humility of this beast never saw a setting sun; Exterminator as he came to be known owing to his exceptional physique and unappealing looks, he was the most intelligent and orderly race horse American racing history saw and experienced. Early Life Exterminator was originally bred and foaled by F.D. Knight’s mother on her farm in Lexington, Kentucky. Born to sire McGee, Exterminator was sold to J. Cal Milam who introduced him to thoroughbred racing with his maiden break at the Latonia racetrack, a six furlong race that Exterminator won easily by three comfort lengths. Having developed a sprain in the neck, Exterminator was made to sit through the rest of his maiden season. Sold soon to Willis Sharpe Kilmer, Exterminator was now being utilized as a workhorse for Kilmer’s classy and polished race horses. Kilmer intended to use Exterminator’s racing skills and exceptionally patient behaviours to prepare his world famous colt, Sun Briar. It was an unfortunate event when the prized colt developed an infection and had to be scrapped off the very last minute. Trainer Henry McDaniel decided to give this extremely humble, controlled yet aggressive racer his break. Racing Career The Derby track was heavy from the rains and however unimpressive his racing preps has been, Exterminator was a placid contender waiting for the challenge to begin. While in the initial stretch he ran comfortably at the trailing end, it was towards the home stretch that the Exterminator started killing all contention, overtaking every horse one after the other, gliding to a victorious win by a length. Exterminator soon became the king of handicaps. He carried a highest of 140 pounds and still managed a win with 138. His minimum ever impost was of 130 pounds. Exterminator went on to start in 99 races in all with 50 of them won and 17 each in second and third place finishes. Exterminator created two world records when he raced as a five year old, the Saratoga Cup won in 2:56 2/5 for 1 ¾ miles and the Autumn Gold Cup going at a two mile distance closed in 3:21 4/5. Exterminator continued to race even as a six year old, at seven, eight and nine years of age. Nicknamed ‘Bones’ by his close ones and media, Exterminator retired with a career earnings of $252,996. He died at the age of 30 and lays next to his stable mate Sun Brair in the Whispering Pines Pet Cemetery, NY.
