Cosplay, shortened form of costume play, is a type of performance art in which participants represent a specific character by wearing costumes and accessories. Characters are often drawn from popular fiction in Japan. However, according to the latest trends, characters from American animated films and sci-fi movies are also favorite choices. Also, possible inspirations would be leading characters from manga, anime, comic books, video games, and fantasy movies. Nobuyuki Takahashi of the Japanese Studio Hard coined the word “cosplay” while writing an article about the Los Angeles Science Fiction World Conference that he attended in 1984. He was so impressed by the hall and the costumed fans and reported about these in Japanese science fiction magazines. Moreover, the appearance of cosplayers at manga events makes such conventions a popular draw for photographers. To put things in order, rules are strictly implemented inside the venue. Cosplayers pose for photographers in designated areas only, and the photographers are not allowed to press them for personal contact information, follow them outside the area, or take photos of exhibits in the hall itself without permission. If you are nervous about cosplaying for the first time and are planning on a particular event, it is strongly suggested that you watch anime movies and check some cosplay fora or groups first. This will help you meet other people, gain new friends, and slide into a group, so you won’t be on your own the first time you attend a cosplay convention. If you frequently watch anime movies or some anime series, most probably you have some ideas how you are going to portray the character. More often than not, people pick characters if they find that particular character has a personality similar to theirs. It is also possible that they want to copy the cool attributes of the character and flaunt it through cosplay. Once you are sure about your chosen character, you can now be creative and have some fun while making your costume and props. As you watch anime movies, keep in mind the important details of your character’s outfit. You may also want to try acting in character and posing in front of the mirror for you to gain more confidence in projecting your character.
