Ancient humans were linked with the world that in many ways we have lost today. The very earliest human records show evidence of what we can see as psychic abilities. The idea of another world that influences ours is deeply rooted in prehistory. This sense of the world slowly developed into the ability to communicate with the other world which people can still do today. Ancient psychics were very important people as they helped to interpret the world for other people. The world was a very confusing place and explanations gained via psychic abilities helped people to understand many of the natural and manmade events that were happening around them in a seemingly random fashion. Ancient psychics would not necessarily have thought of themselves as having psychic ability in the way that we understand it. They were responding to the forces they sensed around them and learned to develop ways of engaging with them. If you look at the abilities attributed to the historical figure medicine man or shaman it is clear that these people were channelling powers that we would definitely describe today as psychic. Many historians agree that historical figures that have been called prophets and healers could equally well be described as ancient psychics. Many pre-Christian cultures had a huge reliance on their use of psychic connections and powers. The Greeks can definitely be described as being ancient psychics. Much of their understanding of the world was gained through divination and the clear use of psychic communication. The best example of this is the Delphic oracle where a priestess would receive visions which could then be interpreted by an elite class of priests. The ancient Greeks understood this as messages from their group of gods, but it is possible that they were in touch with the same forces that all psychics have always been in touch with. Descriptions of the oracle involve what we would call clairvoyance and out of body experiences. Ancient psychics in the form of oracles, astrologers and witches were very important and revered figures their cultures. They were often in positions where there advice would be directly sought by the leaders in order to make significant decisions. Historical records are full of accounts of what we would call psychics being consulted about the most important events of the time. People had a belief in and connection with the spirit world that has in many ways been lost in the modern world. The abilities of psychics were well understood in the ancient world and psychic ability was widely accepted as a way of understanding and engaging with the world. Of course, psychic powers began to be misunderstood and psychics themselves were persecuted. These days a greater understanding is returning.
