If you have a problem with water getting into your basement, you have most likely considered installing a sump pump to help deal with the problem. Many experts recommend that before you decide to go ahead with installing a sump pump, you make sure to diagnose the reason you are getting water in your basement. This is because often water problems are caused by lack of drainage around your foundation rather than a problem with the house structure itself. If this is the case, installing a sump pump might not be necessary. To figure out whether or not you should go forward with installing a sump pump, take a good look around the outside of your home to see how well your drainage system works. You might want to do this when its raining so that you can see where the water flows. When the rain hits your roof, is it flowing correctly through all of the gutters and into the downspouts and is it then being directed at least 4 feet away from the house? If not, you might be able to fix your water problem a lot less expensively than installing a sump pump by doing a few simple repairs. Cleaning out any clogs in the gutters and purchasing a longer downspout extension would be much simpler than installing a sump pump. After checking the water flow, you will want to make sure that the dirt around your home is all sloping away from the house instead of sloping towards it. It is very important that an area approximately 3 feet around the entire perimeter of your home is sloping downwards, away from your house. This will ensure that water hitting the ground flows into the middle of your yard instead of into your basement. After checking and repairing these things, if you find that there is still water leaking into your basement, you may need to consider installing a sump pump. You might be in an area where there is a high ground-water table during the rainy season or hidden channels from sewer and utility installation. In these cases, installing a sump pump is probably the best solution to your problem. If you are in a newer home, you are in luck because most new homes in rainy areas already have a sump pit and drainage tile system under the basement floor. If so, installing a sump pump will be fairly simple to do yourself. If you do not have the sump pit and drainage tile system under your basement floor, installing one yourself is going to be a huge job and hiring someone to do it for you will be quite expensive. You will need to weigh the pros and cons of spending the money to gain the advantage of having a dry basement against the benefit of saving money and continuing to have a water problem. If you have a water problem that affects your entire basement, you are probably losing a lot of living space in your home, so installing a sump pit and drainage tile system may be worth the money. If your problem is only in a small area of the basement, you can install an isolated sump pit . Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional is up to your budget and expertise level.
