Sump pump basins often have holes in the sides, which allow water from the surrounding ground to seep in, while keeping stones, leaves, and other debris from entering. Choose sump pump basins that are large enough and deep enough for your basement. It is also a good choice to find sump pump basins that already have the pump stand built in so that you do not need to purchase a separate piece.Trace the outline of the sump pump basins onto the basement floor. Make sure that you know where the main drain line and other pipes are located in your basement before you begin to remove the concrete in order to avoid creating the very type of problem that you are trying to avoid by using sump pump basins. Use a jackhammer to drill carefully through the floor in the designated area. Naturally the jackhammer will not create perfectly straight lines, so begin drilling inside of the lines that you drew on the floor. Once most of the concrete is removed from the area, use a smaller bit to ensure that the hole is the correct size and shape for your basin.Dig a hole in the dirt underneath your foundation that is the correct length, width, and depth for your sump pump basin. It is important to avoid removing too much dirt from underneath your foundation in order to maintain the integrity of the foundation. Once this has been done, place the basin in the hole and pour gravel into the surrounding area, adjusting the basin to make sure it is level and that it is securely surrounded by gravel and earth. Then, pour a small amount of concrete to secure the sump pump basin and to make sure that the space is safe to walk on and use.Normally sump pump basins should have a solid lid that fits over top. In the process of installing the basin, make sure that the lid can fit smoothly and correctly on the basin. Once all of this has been done, allow the concrete to dry completely before you begin installing the sump pump and other plumbing lines and fixtures that will complete your system to avoid basement flooding.
