If you ask anyone about what they think are the most popular travel destinations in Asia most people would say Thailand. And they would be right. But why is that? Thailand is an easy country to travel to from Europe, Middle East, USA and Australia with daily direct flights to Bangkok. Bangkok’s international airport is a major hub airport within Asia and many flights transit through Bangkok on the way to Europe and the Middle East. Thai Airlines is another reason why visitors come to Thailand. This airline has an enviable reputation for flight excellence. When visitors come to Thailand where do they go and what do they do? The capital city, Bangkok, is the major attraction and most visited city in Thailand. The accommodation is inexpensive compared to comparable hotels in Europe, USA and Australia. Even backpackers can afford to stay in cheap Bangkok hotels rather than a backpackers resort. Bangkok is a haven for westerns as the exchange rate makes the prices of everything very affordable. You can travel in a taxi for 15 minutes and only end up paying three or four dollars - try that in London or New York. For the females, there are endless shopping centres and markets where you will find every type of product from luxury designer goods to cheap (but good quality) fake products. For men, there are endless bars and nightclubs filled with attractive, young ladies waiting for your company. But once you have experienced the big city of Bangkok and all it has to offer you need to venture out to the rest of Thailand. Personally, I find southern Thailand the most interesting part of the country. However, it will be a one hour flight to get there or an overnight train if you are really adventurous. That brings us to the second most popular tourist destination in Thailand, Phuket. Phuket is a large island that is connected to the mainland with a causeway bridge at the northern end. There is an international airport so many people fly in and fly out on the budget airlines. The main areas are Patong Beach and Karon Beach located on the south western side of the island. There are many resort hotels at very reasonable prices and plenty of lively, naughty nightlife in Patong beach. If you are looking for a quieter holiday or have family with you perhaps Karon Beach would be better. Phuket makes it easy for tourists to take one of the daily boat trips to the southern islands such as James Bond island (where a James Bond movie was located) and famous Phi Phi Island. There is so much to do in the area with every water sport and activity imaginable. There are many other activities established for visitors such as elephant rides, golf, fishing, hiking, dinner shows and much more. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind from the stress of live in the western world. In fact, Phuket has a large population of western retirees who came here and never went home.
