In Des Moines hospice workers are faced with a number of different challenges. Each challenge is as unique as the patients. These are the times when the families lean on the members of the program to help them find what it is they need. Within the confines of this program there are difficulties in providing a medical free environment. While many patients and their family members have often requested this, the program typically works with the support of a medical community to help ease discomfort. Medical support that is provided is there to make the patient more comfortable and to allow the workers to report changes and make suggestions to improve comfort when possible. Improving comfort, preparing patients for death, and helping family members and friends grieve is the ultimate role of the dedicated men and women that make up this organization. Des Moines hospice gives patients and families a sense of peace during a very difficult time. Without such programs many patients would have an extended period of suffering. So would their families.
