If you would like to irrigate your lawn using a local natural water source such as a river or lake, you may be thinking about purchasing a lawn sprinkler pump. That is actually a very important component in your irrigation system, but there are a few mistakes that people make when selecting a lawn sprinkler pump, and here are some tips on avoiding those mistakes. First, wait to purchase the lawn sprinkler pump until after you have designed the actual irrigation system. People who buy the pump first and try to design the sprinkler system around it often find that the pump they purchased is not the right one for the system they need. As with any big project, careful planning is a very important step that can save you time and money. Next, it is helpful to understand that labels on the different lawn sprinkler pump models can be somewhat misleading if you don't understand them. For one thing, as you read the lawn sprinkler pump labels, you may read something like 20 GPM, 50 PSI. At a first glance, you may think that means that the lawn sprinkler pump will pump 20 GPM at 50 PSI, but in most cases you should read it as 20 GPM or 50 PSI. This is a very important difference that you need to understand. Always be careful when reading labels and ask a sales associate to explain them to you if you don't understand them. Third, the name on the lawn sprinkler pump can be confusing. For instance, most of the pumps labeled as irrigation pumps are very small and can run one small sprinkler head; they are not suitable or capable of being used as a lawn sprinkler pump that is used to irrigate a lawn or garden. You should look for a label that tells you it is a high pressure pump if you are using it for a sprinkler system. The most common type of lawn sprinkler pump is an end-suction centrifugal pump, which is designed to push water rather than pull it. These are great pumps for irrigation systems, but you need to remember that unless the water source is above the level of the pump so that water can flow down an intake pipe, they will need to be as close to the water as possible. They have a hard time sucking water up into the pump, and that will decrease the efficiency of the lawn sprinkler pump. It is best to keep them less than five feet above the level of the water. Finally, keep your lawn sprinkler pump covered in order to protect it. Nearly every pump will include instructions to keep it covered if you want the warranty to be honored. These pumps are not designed to be out in the weather, so if you want yours to last for years, then you will take care of it and make sure it is properly covered. By doing these things, you will avoid the most common mistakes individuals make when purchasing a pump for their lawn sprinkler system.
