Cephalexin is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as urinary tract infections, pneumonia and bone, ear, and skin. It belongs to first-generation cephalosporin used especially in the treatment of respiratory and urinary tract infections. It interferes with bacterial cell-wall synthesis, causing cell to rupture and die. It is active against many gram-positive bacteria and shows limited activity against gram-negative bacteria. Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take cephalexin and talk to your doctor if you experience mild nausea or diarrhea, or a yeast infection of the mouth or vagina. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome. It is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist what medicines you are already taking, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start treatment with Cephalexin.
