From Roman’s Chapter 8 in the King James version of the Bible is says in verses 26 and 27: 26] Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. [27] And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. There is a lot to say about Romans Chapter 8 and a lot of overlay in terms of power and meaning. Limiting the discussion to just couple of ideas from verse 26 and 27 which speaks of the Spirit’s assistance to us in prayer, with an emphasis on the help of the Holy Spirit with our infirmities which are paralleled to the groanings of creation. One major point is to hone in and acknowledge, possibly with thanks anything that can realistically be seen as help from the Lord, although sometimes in the moment it may be seen as partial help when you may want more or hope for more, but it is a matter hope and faith in what is yet unseen. What we want to do is focus in on an the reality of the presence of the Spirit having helped us, or presently helping us. It is also a matter of realizing there are numerous uncontained variables, that you are just not going to be able to exercise control over no matter what. An example would be the weather, which can infringe on so many plans and come as in the moment. Signs do come from the sky to individuals. This variable can be however affected by prayer, as we see in the case of Elijah who was considered righteous and his individual prayers were able to affect widespread weather patterns for years. It is good to remember the works of the Lord, and it is important to hone in on what indeed can be discerned directly as the Lord’s help thru the very real ongoing personal presence of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit itself that makes intercessions for us, and this is an awesomely powerful statement. While heavenly beings such as angels are present to help us, it is the Spirit, the highest of possibility that is present and intervening for us. This doesn’t really equate to human terms however a beginning analogy might be in say the Middle Ages that your case would go right to the King himself. I’m sure that in the very vast majority this was not the case of the average person in the Middle Ages, but in prayer this is how far it goes. Within these groanings is in part undiscoverable by us as it goes into levels and areas beyond what can be contained in speech. This is another part of the deference within this to the will of God, that anything we could possible utter in terms of speech cannot reach fully into these groanings of the Spirit. It is something that is a reality but a reality that cannot be filled by words. What we can search for ourselves is limited to our abilities and circumstances. The Spirit maketh intercession which is an actual act of creation, emanating from original creation. These made intercessions are actually creation and creative acts of God. The will of God is involved in this, and this is according to the will of God, as was original creation. These verses say that we don’t know what we should pray for as we ought, indicating that we are entering also into creation to a degree when we pray, as the Spirit comes into the realm of the prayers of the saints in mysterious fashion that cannot be described with words. A possible picture to this could be a simple intercessory prayer becoming enlarged by the Spirit through groanings of creation. This is why it is believed one simple prayer can sweep across the whole earth through the intercession of the Spirit, as this is a power that is from original creation. An individual would not even know for example people in distance lands and we not know how to pray as they ought for them in totality. Yet the mystery of prayer shows how a simple prayer can be illuminated into a powerful presence abroad lighting up the earth itself. When Elijah prayed about the weather, he possessed limited knowledge of what was involved in the creation of weather, yet his prayer affected the creation of the weather for years on end. Intercession is made for the saints according to the will of God. This obviously is a great thing for the saints. For those that are saints, or in the graces of a close relationship with the Lord, there is a lot to lose by turning aside from this relationship. Contained within all this is the possibility that the landscape of everything might be changed even for the sake of a few, and we do see examples of this in the Bible. There was a forward look to this in God’s discussion with Abraham, he would have the future and even the far future go a certain way, for the sake of Abraham. There might be only a few saints residing in a big city, yet the Lord might have mercy on a whole city for the sake of his saints. There is an sense is no need to remind the Lord of his will, but it is useful to intersperse prayer with asking for the Lord’s will, as we may be stampeding around it and sometimes it is better to let go a bit on either extended prayer efforts and intersperse requests for God’s will to realize for yourself that this is what is operative and supreme. The Spirit already has a search of the hearts and does know, hence he does know what we need before we ask him. When you think help is needed,always think of the Holy Spirit.
