It is important to own either portable or permanent standby generators if you live in an area of the country that is prone to hurricanes or tornadoes. Standby generators are however, great to own if you live anywhere in the country because they can help save your appliances and help you to feel safe and protected if the power goes out during a regular power outage or during a natural disaster. Many home owners feel that the security you feel and the longevity of their appliances far outweighs the price of the standby generators. Perhaps people shouldn't worry about how often the power goes out, but should be concerned about the effects of the outage. For example, without emergency standby generators, security systems can falter, basements may flood and home businesses may fail. Even just one power outage may result in thousands of dollars in damages to appliances and equipment. But with standby generators you can protect your investments. Obviously, many homeowners and businesses cannot afford to simply ride out power outage after power outage. So many business owners are deciding to install emergency standby generators in order to protect their investments. Similarly, a homeowner is protecting his or her family by installing home standby generators that are capable of running the necessary appliances and lights in their home. The concept of standby generators is very simple. Standby generators are installed outside and will operate just like a central conditioner with two differences. Instead of using a thermostat, they use an automatic transfer switch which monitors your utility power anytime during the day or night. When it goes out, the automatic transfer switch turns it on, whether you are at home or not, and the standby generators automatically shut off when the power is restored. The other difference between standby generators or emergency gas generators and air conditioning is that the a/c runs off electric motors, which obviously will not work during a power outage; so standby generators have engines instead. The standby generators can be connected to your natural gas or propane tank and will generate electricity as long as fuel is supplied. The basic home standby generators start at approximately 7 kilowatts and while that will not power the entire house it will generate enough electricity to see you safely through a power outage. Smaller standby generators will have no problem generating enough electricity to ensure that you can get any individual appliance working. In order to run all of your larger appliances, such as an air conditioner, you will need at least 13 kilowatt standby generators and if you have a 5 ton unit it will require at least a 16 kilowatt generator. If you need another less expensive alternative, then you should consider purchasing a small standby generator and a window air conditioning unit to be used only during a power outage. So be sure and stop by your local home improvement center to check out all of the great standby generators and the accessories to go with them. You will be sure to find the standby generators to fit all of your electrical needs and will be able to transfer power without a hitch when the power fails.
