Though Goldikova lost her last race, the Group 1 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp, she will make what will possibly be her last start in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Mile in which she will seek to become a four time consecutive winner. Dream Ahead defeated her in the Prix de la Foret and could have one last start in the Breeders’ Cup Mile before heading off to the breeding shed, in which case he would face Goldikova one last time. Dream Ahead’s trainer David Simcock, when placing him under consideration to running him at Churchill Downs next month, noted that it is a “distinct possibility”. Goldikova and Dream Ahead ran head to head the last furlong, but the younger and stronger horse prevailed over her despite drifting just a bit to the left. If she can avenge her loss to Dream Ahead in the Breeders Cup and become a four-time winner of the Mile, she has to be considered on par with all the great North American mares of all time. In some ways what she will have accomplished will be even more remarkable than what great ones like Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta accomplished. Goldikova will have beaten a world class field made up mostly of males. It is true that both Rachel and Zenyatta both accomplished this fea;, Goldikova did it more times here in the United States alone, not even counting how many times she beat the boys over in Europe. She is a six year old so she may be showing a little age now, but she is still a formidable rival. Losing a Group 1 in Europe at Longchamp by just a head means she is still in great form. Is she as strong as she was the previous three years? That remains to be seen, but we shall see come November. Goldikova’s third win in the Mile was already unprecedented. The only other two-time winners of the Breeders’ Cup Mile were Miesque back in the late 1980s, Lure in the early 1990s, and Da Hoss who won the race in non-consecutive years in 1996 and 1998. A fourth win in the Breeders’ Cup Mile would simply be Goldikova breaking her own record. In fact, no horse has won three Breeders’ Cup races among all the different races. Tiznow won back-to-back Classics in 2000 and 2001. Midnight Lute won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint in both 2007 and 2008. Bayakoa took back-to-back Ladies’ Classics back in 1989 and 1990, and Ouija Board won the Filly and Mare turf in both 2004 and 2006. Three times is the charm, so a little bit of luck will really have to be on her side to get a fourth. Goldikova is one of the best female horses to ever race in the world.
