Buying Circular Saws - A Shoppers Guide

Home Improvement
A circular saw is a tool to cut mainly wood in a straight line. It’s powered by electricity. It has a circular disc with saw teeth all over its periphery. The disc is driven by an electrical motor. Saws may be of different sizes and different designs. Smaller ones are mostly hand held and bigger ones are bench mounted and used in saw mills. Our topic here is the hand held circular saws.

Before selecting a saw, you should know your requirements. These may include; the material you will saw, the maximum thickness of the material to be sawn, the maximum weight of the tool you desire, and the speed of cutting.

When you start to search the web for your saw, you will face some new questions about the type of a saw. The type depends on the orientation of the drive motor with respect to the circular blade of the saw. In one type, the motor protrudes out from the blade at an angle of 90 degrees. The motor connects to the cutting disc directly or through a spur gear. This type is called a sidewinder.

Another type is the worm gear drive. Here, the motor doesn’t protrude out; it’s rather parallel with the cutter blade. This is heavier and stronger and good for heavy work. On the other hand, a sidewinder is much lighter and cheaper. It’s easy to operate. Hence, it’s popular for domestic use.

These types of saws have kerf-indicator notches to help cut straight. This is not much help. It’s better to see the blade and keep it in line with the cut. Some of the manufacturers, like Black & Decker, Ryobi and Skil have equipped their saws with laser pointers for the indication. But at day time, if you work out doors, the laser is not visible at all. So it’s a useless ornament only.

Another vital point for an accurate cut is the adjustment of blade depth and its angle. A circular saw has a knob or a lever for this adjustment. A lever is more convenient for the purpose.

This power tool is not independent of left hand and right hand use. So you should choose the correct one for you. Otherwise, you won’t be able to see the cutting path of the saw and the result will be a bad cut. The material used for wood cutter circular blades is Tungsten Carbide tipped (TCT) or High Speed Steel (HSS). Both are alright for sawing wood.

Corded and cordless models are designed by all renowned makers. Logically, a cordless model is equipped with a rechargeable battery and a charging unit, while a corded model is driven direct from the wall outlet. The power tool is designed with different voltage ratings. The standard ratings are 110, 230 and 240 volts. Some of the leading manufacturers of circular saws are Black & Decker, SkilInc, Dewalt, Hitachi, Makita, Bosch, Ryobi, Porter-Cable and Milwaukee.
