Port Location: The Port of Tilbury and the London Cruise Terminal are in the southeastern portion of England. It is located 25 miles east of London at the head of the Thames estuary. All of London’s main airports are within an hour by car from the port. Transport: The nearest train station, Tilbury Riverside Station, is a short taxi ride away from the port. There is also a ferry that runs from the pier at Tilbury to the south bank of the Thames. If exploring London walking, is the best way to get around once you get to the areas with the more famous sites. There are also plenty of “Tube” stops around London, the city’s subway system. Description: The port of Tilbury is the only deep water cruise facility in London. As such, it is considered the gateway to London for deep-sea cruise vessels. It has been used as an international port since 1850. This port is popular as a point to turn around for cruises of the Baltic and Northern Europe as well as an embarkation point for Tilbury cruises. Sightseeing and Excursions: With London just 25 miles away, there is no end to the sightseeing and things to do before and after Tilbury cruises. But first you may want to check out the area around the port and the historic sights located there. Tilbury Fort right on the estuary was originally built by Henry VIII and has been used throughout the years, including during the World War II, to protect London from approaches by sea. Coalhouse Fort is a battery also built by Henry VIII. It is thought to be one of the United Kingdom’s examples of an armoured casement. A sightseeing excursion into London offers plenty to see. Witness one of the world’s most famous bridges – the Tower Bridge. Visit Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and the Parliament buildings, all within easy walking distance of each other. Spend a day museum and gallery hopping and see The Tate Britain, the National Gallery, and the British Museum. Beaches: The closest beach to the Port of Tilbury is Bell Wharf Beach. It is approximately and 18-mile drive. Shopping: A trip into London can provide plenty of shopping opportunities to prepare for Tilbury cruises.
