Nintendo have arguably got one of the strongest brand mascots in the entire world – Super Mario. This short fat Italian plumber is possibly one of the most recognisable faces worldwide. As the story goes, Mario and his brother Luigi are plumbers in New York when one day they find a pipe which leads to the Mushroom Kingdom, and this was a discovery which has led to nearly 3 decades of gaming goodness. It all started with a guest appearance in a Donkey Kong game, with Mario then appearing in his very own adventure, ‘Super Mario Land’ on the Game Boy. At the time there was no better handheld console game out there, what with jumping on Goombas and Koopa Troopers, whilst tackling the harsh landscape with jumps and running. Since his first appearance Mario platforms have become the stuff of legend, and Mario has more in his bag of tricks then just running and jumping now. Nintendo have created a Mario that has tried his hand at a whole variety of gaming styles. There is a Mario sports range with tennis, football, golf and much more. More recently Mario has become a mascot to another global event – The Olympics. In this series he has been teamed up with a character that was once seen as his biggest rival, Sonic from Sega. This was a clever collaboration from both companies as this fierce rivalry, which has spanned decades, is transmitted into the game to make it extremely passionate, heartfelt and, basically, just a great game. It involves a lot of button mashing and joystick waggling. Mario also enjoys to party, with the Mario Party series gamers can enjoy games communally and it offers what is basically a board game via your TV. Gamers must make their way around the board whilst completing and competing in mini games which can range from the difficult to the plain bizarre. Probably the greatest spin off series in the Mario franchise is the Mario Kart games. In these games many of the characters from the regular Mario series compete in races within karts. However this definitely isn’t like another race game as gamers get power ups as they go round the track which could be a mushroom offering players a speed boost or a red shell which players can fire at their rivals to impede their progress and maybe even allow them to overtake. For a gaming character to appear in ten games is a massive feat, but to appear in games year in, year out for over 25 years really does show their worldwide popularity.
