This sort of act shouldn’t be attempted until you feel you are completely ready, as the dragons are a formidable foe. Indeed, apart from the main quest you could just be in a city stocking up on supplies or trading with the locals when a dragon could decide to attack the city and set everything in it alight. With you being the main character and so heroic you usually would decide to help the city inhabitants defend their home and earn yourself some vital experience points along the way that can be spent on improving your character whether mentally, physically or magically.
