Best tips to achieve the level of fitness for boxing you need!

If you've recently taken up the sport of boxing, then you know that it is an exciting pastime. Competing one on one in the ring is a thrill which no other endeavour can match. However, before you can excel within the ring, you need a serious training regimen outside it, to give you the base fitness level you'll need to box effectively. Let's look at an overview of what fitness for boxing entails.

The very first thing you'll need is to build up your level of endurance. Without extra reserves of energy built in, you may come out swinging hard in the first rounds, but you will begin to flag quickly as the match progresses. Therefore, working on your endurance is a vital area of training more important than anything else. What are the best ways to do so? Cardio training is the most effective approach, as it forces your body to exercise aerobically, expanding your cells ability to utilize and store oxygen. Without this, you'll be gasping for breath in the later rounds, and your muscle strength will be reduced as well. Running is an excellent way to get the level of fitness for boxing which you need, though there are some tips to enhance your progress. When you are in training, add a weighted backpack, and you will compound the effect of your run. Another technique you can employ is stair running, as almost nothing demands more from your cardiovascular system than the combination of aerobic and weight bearing exercise. As an added benefit, your lower body will see muscle gains from this type of training as well.

A perennial training favourite among boxers is the jump rope, as it helps you to quickly achieve the level of fitness for boxing you're aiming for. It enhances your aerobic conditioning and the speed of your feet at the same time. As you probably know, light feet make for a great boxer, so this is a good exercise to add to your daily training schedule. Another boxing specific workout is the speed bag, which will help you work up a sweat, and quicken your hands as well. Try to include this practice at least five times a week, and you will begin to see the results in your punching speed in the ring.

The second area to cover in the fitness for boxing topic is weight training. No matter how aerobically fit you are, if you can't hit your opponent with any force, you won't have much success in your matches. That's where weight lifting comes into play. Rotation is key here, as you don't want to damage your muscles by over-training them. Pay special attention to the abs when in the weight room, as a strong core is crucial. If you can't absorb a body blow, you'll have the wind knocked out of you, and that can spell disaster in any match.
