Many people have been using the Internet for so long they no longer allot enough time to watch television. They spend most of their time connecting with friends through email, online messengers, social networks, and online games. They also use the computer to download and listen to music; television is given less time than usual. Television broadcasting networks have cleverly taken advantage of the computer to keep delivering their goods. Some creative talents have created independent series of works distributed directly to the Internet. In any case, it is clear that people watch TV shows online for free. Television broadcasting on the Internet comes in many different forms. It can be confusing because most of them are interchangeably called Internet television or Web television. These are actually different from one another; here are the distinctions between them. What people recognize the most as Internet television is actually IPTV or Internet protocol television. IPTV is a system of services that distribute television programs’ episodes into the Internet via various websites and applications. Internet users may enjoy live television, viewing the episodes on the same time it is being aired on television, or catch-up TV, viewing episodes from a stored archive of episodes. The earliest example of IPTV can be traced back to 1994 when ABC’s World News Now was aired on the Internet. Internet television is very similar because it allows Internet users to view programs from a directory; you can think of it like being in a hotel and using a TV guide. The earliest example of this was done in 2005 by a Greek website. In subsequent examples, broadcasting networks distribute their programs to a website that users can access and watch the episodes from. Many television programs distributed via Internet television are news programs. Web television is distinctive from either of the previous examples. Web TV broadcasts series designed specifically for Internet viewing. Many examples of web TV programs are short series with equally short episodes. Attuned to the fast-paced nature of Internet surfing, these programs are often light and easy to follow, although the plot may be complex. Various video streaming websites show these Web TV programs where Internet users can easily find them. Some people watch TV shows online for free because many of these programs are independent productions that are more interested in sharing their talent than acquiring profit. However, they may get their profit in partnership with the streaming websites that support them. Meanwhile, the users easily find these programs by subscribing to the user that uploaded the episodes.
