Benzathine penicillin and procaine penicillin is an antibiotic that fights bacteria in your body. Bicillin-3 (L-A) is used to treat many different types of severe infections, including strep and staph infections, diphtheria, meningitis, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Benzathine penicillin and procaine penicillin is also used to prevent infections of the heart valves in people with certain heart conditions who need to have dental work or surgery, it may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide. Bicillin-3 is active against Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus spp. (not producing penicillinase), Streptococcus spp. (including Streptococcus pneumoniae), Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus anthracis; Gram-negative bacteria: Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, Actinomyces israelii. Administer by DEEP INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION in the upper, outer quadrant of the buttock. In neonates, infants and small children, the midlateral aspect of the thigh may be preferable. When doses are repeated, vary the injection site. The disposable syringe for this product incorporates several features that are designed to facilitate its use. A single, small indentation, or "dot," has been punched into the metal ring that surrounds the neck of the syringe near the base of the needle. It is important that this "dot" be placed in a position so that it can be easily visualized by the operator following the intramuscular insertion of the syringe needle. Side effects: Hypersensitivity reactions including the following: skin eruptions (maculopapular to exfoliative dermatitis), urticaria, laryngeal edema, fever, eosinophilia; other serum sickness-like reactions (including chills, fever, edema, arthralgia, and prostration); and anaphylaxis including shock and death. Note: Urticaria, other skin rashes, and serum sickness-like reactions may be controlled with antihistamines and, if necessary, systemic corticosteroids. Whenever such reactions occur, the drug should be discontinued unless, in the opinion of the physician, the condition being treated is life-threatening and amenable only to therapy with Bicillin L-A. Serious anaphylactic reactions require immediate emergency treatment with epinephrine.
