Mobile advertising also sometimes referred to as cellular advertising can be referred to as advertising done through the use of mobile or cellular phones. The advertising can be done in various modes including in – game, location based, mobile web marketing, MMS (Multi Media Services) and SMS (Short Messaging Service). The SMS service is also referred to as text messaging. The complexity of the advertisement sent to the mobile phones may depend on the model of the phone. This advertising should be carried out in a way to ensure that the end aim of the advertising is achieved. One of the main reasons why mobile advertising has not achieved its purpose is lack of right timing in regards to when the advertising is done. For example when the advertising is done through text messaging, the texts should be sent at a time that is appropriate for the target audience otherwise the audience will consider it as a nuisance. To ensure this kind of advertising is effective, the texts need to be sent over well regulated intervals. Depending on the size of the target market, it may be prudent to ensure that the type of mobile advertisement used is one that can be received by all phone models. Using Multi-Media Services as a form of mobile advertisement may be used for example to target a market that usually uses this kind of mobile service. This form of mobile advertisement may not be suitable though when the target market is wide and not all of it uses the mobile Multi-Media Service on a regular basis. When coming up with the contents of the mobile advertisement it is important that the advertisement be one that has a message that is interesting, catchy and one that possibly leads the target market to interact positively with the company sending the advertisement. It is also important to take into account the financial implications of the type of mobile advertisement carried out with the text messaging option being the most expensive of the different types of advertisements. When aiming to be more specific in terms of market targeting, location based advertising can be considered since it narrows down to the target through location. When looking to increase sales one may wish to consider text messaging services that involve a two way communication with the company through business codes which also allows the company to know whether the aim of the advertisement has been achieved through personalized interaction with the target market.
