PART 14. COURTSHIP: SHOULD HOLY KISSES BE EXCUSED IN THIS MATTER? KISSES What does the scripture reveal to us about kisses? Kisses are proper and beautiful expressions of love within marriage and not allowed outside marriage except done within the safeguards of the scriptures. In the scriptures Christian men who share their love to one another through kissing does so at the cheek level. In some condition, noble men do embrace one another and with kisses at the cheek level show their expressions of love and admiration. We saw in Genesis 27:27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed. Genesis 27:27kJV Here is an instance of kissing: Jacob kissed his father, Jacob and Esau kissed each other (Genesis 33:4). Also the scriptures recorded that Joseph kissed his brethren (Genesis 45:15) and Jonathan and David kissed one another (I Sam 20:41) Out of love, David kissed his son, Absalom: (II Sam 14:13) but Absalom kissed the men in Israel to steal away their hearts from King David. (II Sam 15:5) In the New Testament church we saw kisses and embracing been practiced as an expression of brotherly love. The scripture in Acts 20: 37 revealed a more stirring scene. When Paul went to Miletus and the elders of the church in Ephesus gathered to meet with him. Paul by revelation perceived that he would never visit them again announced to them what the Spirit ministered to him. Thereafter these godly men with tears fell upon Paul’s neck and kissed him. (Acts 20:37) In the New Testament Christians have been commended to salute one another with a holy kiss or kiss of brotherly love. (Rom 16:16, 2cor 16:20, 2cor 13:12, I Thes.5:26, I Pet 5:14); We truly believe that the early Christians guarded against lust in this practice by ensuring that Christian men greet their fellow brothers with a kiss while Christian women have the liberty of embracing themselves in love. Under the safeguards of blood ties, the kiss between men and women is often proper but there are cases where they also took advantage of this blood ties to commit incest for example, the kiss of father and daughter: This is seen in Genesis 31:55 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place. Genesis 31:55KJV Jacob kissed his cousin Rachel (Gen 29:11) and Laban kissed his married daughters. The kiss of Jacob and Rachel was based on kinship, although from that day Jacob began to develop love for Rachel. They loved themselves and later got married. The safeguards of Christian character and the series of responsibilities on the part of father and daughter, mother and son with strong blood ties, can make kissing proper. Kisses ought to be beautiful and blessed and should come from a pure heart. It ought not to lead to lust or sex passions. It is a Holy practice which requires safeguards just like Holy things. The story of drunken Lot, committing incest with his two daughters shows that alcohol or dope can break down the natural restraint of parental and brotherly love thus kissing may end up in heavy caresses which are often shameful and sinful. The scripture also revealed Amnon who shamefully raped his half-sister, Tamar in 2 Sam 13:1-14 Believers should ensure that the liberty of holy kisses are properly reserved and should not be allowed in the hands of wicked, and hateful men and women who make unholy and vile the pure things of God.
