Planning an affordable vacation abroad involves more than simply identifying cheap travel options, be they cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms or cheap vacation packages. Certain locations are far cheaper to visit than many others. The following are unique and exciting destinations identified by Independent Traveler where you can get the most out of your travel dollar: Hanoi, Vietnam is where French colonial charm blends with Eastern influences from centuries of Chinese domination. Hanoi is Vietnam’s capital and second largest city. B&Bs (Bed and Breakfast) are available for as little as $15, while various rice dishes can be enjoyed from street vendors for $1. Cuzco, Peru is the capital of the Incan Empire and one of Peru’s largest and liveliest cities. Accommodations can be had for under $10 a night at hostels. Taxis are a common and inexpensive way to travel around the city. Local buses and vans cost even less. Bargain meals can be enjoyed at restaurants selling local fare. Local products are available at cheap prices. Sibiu, Romania is referred to by those in the know as the European Capital of Culture because of its Germanic charm, colorful squares, impressive medieval architecture, and many culture and music festivals. Dinner for two with several courses and drinks at a good restaurant in the popular Small Square only costs about $35. Chennai, India is India’s fourth largest city and enjoys direct flights from North America. Chennai houses India’s first zoo, as well as Mughal era paintings at the National Art Gallery and is known for its beautiful beaches. Budget restaurants, many of which are strictly vegetarian, to upscale restaurants are plentiful. San Marcos La Laguna can be found in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Visiting San Marcos is a quiet and cheap way to experience the beautiful volcanic Lake Atitlan, one of the busiest tourist destinations in the country. Mayan culture is prominent in the city in everything from its’ brightly colored clothing to local cuisine. Vegetarian cuisine is popular in San Marcos and inexpensive fresh produce is readily available in open air markets. Fez, Morocco is home to the best preserved old city in the Arab world. The original walled city includes thousands of winding streets and alleys sporting old Arab architecture, vibrant street life and markets that sell a wide array of products; everything from slippers to spices and ceramics to cell phones. Street food in Fez is often as tasty and is half the price of restaurants offering similar fare. Vientiane, Laos has a well deserved reputation for its relaxed lifestyle. Its capital city retains a small town feel. Vientiane offers a wide range of restaurants including regional specialties to Tex-Mex. Noodle shops sell meals for $1. Its most upscale restaurants tend to cost no more than $20 per person.
