Over the last hundred years Phuket has evolved from a tiny tin mining hamlet to a hotspot of tourism and also cultural attractions. The town has architecture inspired by both Chinese and Western roots and this mélange is referred to as Sino-Portuguese. Thus the architecture that combines these cultural heritages has elongated buildings with elaborate columns and narrow fronts. They have many arches, doors and windows. Thus, Old Phuket Town is indeed a wonderful place to experience this unique culture and heritage while also being inspired by the one of a kind architecture that has combined the west and the east. In Old Phuket Town there are a number of restaurants where visitors can enjoy local food, and even stay if one is into backpacking. Some of these tiny hotels have long histories that run back to the time when tourism started in the island. One can still see the one-time police station and its clock tower. There is also the former Chartered Bank building, which had been the initial foreign bank to open its doors in Phuket. For the visitor, the trip to Old Phuket Town can continue way into Talang Road as well; it is Phuket's central commercial area. At one time it used to be the town’s richest neighbourhood. The buildings in this area have been properly conserved and at present most have been turned into coffee shops, hotels and restaurants. Tourists can also find some of the joints made famous by the Leonardo Di Caprio film “The Beach” here. There are also a number of art galleries for the visitor to explore and walk about in and another must visit is the oldest herbalists’ shop here. For the adventurous explorer there are a number of alleys to walk by amidst red and orange shaded buildings. If one wants to discover Old Phuket, there is many a Phuket resort that you can base yourself at. For beach enthusiasts there is many a Patong beach resort to choose from. Millennium Resort Patong Phuket is one of the luxury hotels from which you can explore the old city in the modern day.
