On top of that, they can intubate patients when required, and even perform a cricothyrotomy, which is surgical airway insertion. They are also able to place difficult catheters for venous access…for example, central venous lines. EMT-Ps are also responsible for determining settings for transport ventilators when mechanical ventilation is required. And once again, specific protocols are different depending on your state. Many basic emergency medical technicians that find a love for the job will aspire to further their career and seek the appropriate schooling to become a paramedic, or EMT-P.
