PART19 SHOULD EVERYONE MARRY? Marriage is holy, good and beautifully made to reflect the oneness that exists in heaven. Therefore Jesus Christ, the Pattern Son came down to show us how intimately He relates with His Father in all things, a pattern we must apply to ensure that our homes experience a taste of heaven on earth. No one should come near the institution of marriage irreverently. On the other hand, our world today has experienced nine out of ten marriages ending up in divorce. Men and women who rushed into the institution of marriage ignorantly have had their hopes and aspirations dashed. For some of them, the frustrations of their tender dreams have caused them broken hearts ending up in suicide. We should realize the fact that we all do not have to marry in order to be happy and be fulfilled on earth; just as it is not every one who should enter into college or university and become a graduate in order to be happy and be fulfilled in life. We have heard the success stories and testimonies of great men and women who never married but got fulfilled and happy in life. The case of our brother Paul of Tarsus who lived an exemplary life of self denial in order to carry the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is noteworthy. This quality relationship and diligence with Christ and his mission here on earth is God’s expectation of us. This is the reason why the scripture admonishes those of us that are married to live as though we are unmarried for the sake of the gospel. But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none. 1Corinthians7:29 KJV Let us examine the mind of Christ on this matter from the scripture in Matthew 19:7-12 which states: They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. Matthew19:7-12 KJV Many people avoid marriage because they have not taken time to bear the fruit of the Spirit[ love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance] which is one of the pre-requite conditions we must satisfy before entering into marriage. When Jesus responded to their question relating to divorce, He showed them that they were not tolerant towards their wives and their hearts were hardened which prompted Moses to allow divorce with their wives for flimsy reasons but it was not so from the beginning. This is the time to purge out every corruption that had crept into the institution of marriage. We must examine and correct every wrong impression with the original format ordained by God at the beginning. Due to impatience and lack of restraint the disciples as carnal men drew out conclusions saying: If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. Matthew19:10 KJV The Lord responded thus: But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given………….. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. Matthew19:11-12 KJV By this statement, Jesus Christ was permitting the disciples who had the gift of continence to remain single but with a strong resolve to disallow it because He considers it utterly mischievous for anyone to forbid marriage. Because of this the Lord said “All men cannot receive this saying” The scripture in Matthew 19:12 revealed three fold misfortunes about the marriage institution God had created for mankind. A] Those that are born eunuchs. B] Those that are made eunuchs by men C] Those that made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake In the first two categories these men are handicapped in a way and so are not eligible to be part of the institution of marriage. They are thus created or made therefore have no choice of their own but to remain so; but the third category are those that have every right to go into marriage but by virtue of the grace of God upon their lives have taken a strong decision in their hearts and minds to be eunuchs for the gospel’s sake. These are the ones the Lord said that can receive the message. This affection to single state must be given of God; for no one can receive it except those to whom it is given. Continence is a special gift from God only to some and not to all. In our next series of articles we shall examine the state of Paul the apostle and throw a searchlight into his spirit, soul and body in retrospect to find out those qualities that made him had a fixed and firm resolution in the strength of God’s grace to remain a eunuch for the gospel’s sake and lived an exemplary life for us to follow. Then extrapolate those traits as guidelines to those who would desire to be in God’s service. In our next article details of the contents of the discussion with the Lord regarding the laws of celibacy and the present state of the church shall be released. Let us examine the mind of Paul the Apostle in 1Corinthians9:1-6 KJV Am I not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are not ye my work in the Lord? If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord. Mine answer to them that do examine me is this, Have we not power to eat and to drink? Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working? 1Corinthians 9: 1-6 KJV Here we see Paul trying to assert his mission and character in the work of his ministry. His primary goal was to be a witness of the death and resurrection of Christ. It was not because he had no right to live of the gospel that he maintained himself with his own hands or the right to have a wife by his side like other apostles and brethren but that he took a quality decision to sacrifice his life for the gospel sake. There is no law in the scriptures that require the servant of the Lord to be unmarried. The apostles of the Lord were married as revealed in 1 Corinthian 9:5.by Paul himself. Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord and Cephas? 1Corinthians9:5 KJV The scripture in1 Timothy3:2 states: A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Paul converted Timothy and so called him his son in the faith. The scope of the two epistles 1 and 2 Timothy of Paul was to direct Timothy on how to discharge his duty as an Evangelist. If the same Spirit that moved Paul to remain unmarried led him to declare the mind of God to Timothy that a bishop should be the husband of one wife then there is every reason to believe that every overseer must make it a point of duty to marry in order to avoid fornication. In 1Corinthians7:29 the scripture provided reasons for those who are married to live as though they are not married for the gospel’s sake. I mean, brethren, the appointed time has been winding down and it has grown very short. From now on, let even those who have wives be as if they had none. 1 Corinthians 7: 29 AmplV Perfect marriage where a man and his wife are so compatible spirit to spirit, soul to soul and body to body and the woman complimenting the man in the work of his ministry are perfect vessels to be used by God these last days. The scripture states that they must be sold out to His service and shut in by God in order to deal with ten thousand demons per second per second. The scripture in Deuteronomy 32:30 states: How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up? Deuteronomy 32:30 KJV The scriptures in Deuteronomy 32:30 spelt out the main conditions required by God for either one or two to make great exploits for Him these last days. Firstly, the single or the married in agreement must be sold out to the service of Christ, the Rock of Ages. Secondly, they must release themselves to be shut in for His use alone. It is of great honor for one to be unmarried, diligently functioning in the service of the Lord, shut in and thus consecrated for His use alone. At this spiritual position he draws his power from the Rock and check out one thousand demons per second in spiritual warfare. On the contrary, if two married people being incompatible in their spirit, soul and body as in the case of unbelievers or incompatible in their soul and body as in the case of born again Christians, find themselves not committed or sold out to the Lord, they cannot check out even the weakest of devils in spiritual warfare. Instead of making exploits for the Lord by chasing out ten thousand demons per sec in spiritual warfare, they are being chased out and overcome by ten thousand demons. The scripture in Amos 3:3 states: Can two walk together, except they agree? Let us confirm this thought with the scriptures in Act19: 14-16 which reads: And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. Acts 19:14-16 KJV The greatest blunder one can make in life is to be hasty in getting into marriage. It is often said, ‘Rush in rush out in tears through the same gate. Now we see the exit simply following the entrance. The way of possessing is the way of losing. Therefore we can sum up those countless tragedies with this adage which says: “Marriage in haste repents at leisure” God who created every cell in man says in Genesis 2:18 that it is not good for a man to be alone. No matter how much we create laws to suppress the natural instinct of man it will one day spring up wild like a lion ready to catch its prey. Therefore, the Acts and Vows of celibacy are foreign to the scriptures. Priests along these lines of thought should arise, liberate themselves and get married to avoid the sin of adultery and fornication. The law was made for man and not man for the law The scripture states in 1Corinthians 7:1, 2 8, 9: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn. 1Corinthians 7:1, 2, 8, 9 KJV Apart from the unfortunate situation of the priesthood, God generally did not establish marriage for everyone. The scripture reveals in 1Corinthians 7:6-8 that every man has his own gift that is natural constitution from God that may make him well given to or not to marry. But I speak this by permission, and not of commandment. For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that. 1Corinthians 7:6-7 KJV Here the scripture reveals that there are people that have the “proper gift of God” to marry while others have the ‘”proper gift of God” not to marry. All the same it is by working with God in our individual ministries that we uncover our position and the type of gift we have of God. The scripture states that a married man cares for the things of the world, how he will please his wife. As the head of his wife, he has a responsibility towards keeping her happy and sound in health, providing her needs and cares in response to the will of God. From experience this is nothing to worry about if we are married under the perfect will of God. We will always find favor with God and all men. Paul and Barnabas were singles and wished that other men follow their footsteps. In fact their decision to become singles did not keep them off tribulations. There were other apostles who were married to show that celibacy is not an ordinance from God therefore it is man- made and should be considered for change in order to avoid the priesthood being burn with impure and lustful desires. It is time for change. The scripture in 1Corinthians9:5, 6 states: Have not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working? 1Corinthians 9:5, 6 KJV I believe Paul had right to marry like other brethren or apostles yet he chose to remain unmarried for the Gospel’s sake seeing the enormous tasks that was laid on him by the Lord. He was a stranger and pilgrim to the home setting. He was in prison several times. He traveled, toiled and a number of times faced deaths for the gospel’s sake. He never had money with which to support a family. What woman would have loved to see her husband once in three years, persecuted, stoned beaten by bandits and hated for the gospel’s sake.
