We all know the importance of keeping properly hydrated, yet the majority of us simply don’t do it. Why is that? Maybe its time for a reminder of why we need to stay committed to hydration. The rule of thumb is to consume 8 ounces of water or sports if you’re exercising over 40 mins. The sugar and salt in your sports drink will help to increase the fluids that go into your body. In place of a sports drink, try coconut water. Its chock full of electrolytes and a much healthier alternative. Here’s a great tip. If you want to know how much hydration you’re losing during physically depending event (sports game, marathon etc) or workout, weigh yourself at the beginning and at the very end. For every pound you lost you should be consuming 8 ounces of fluid. When looking to food for hydration, top of your list is watermelon. It consists of 90% water. Other citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits and lemons are excellent choices. Vegetable wise, celery should be top of your list and tomatoes, green pepper and lettuce are closely behind. Unfortunately we’re not built like cars, we don’t have a warning light that comes on when we’re actually dehydrated. So if you start feeling like you’re having a hard time focusing, concentrating or feeling a headache coming on, chances are you’re dehydrated. Usually signs include headaches and a lack of concentration. Another way to tell if you’re dehydrated is to examine your urine. The darker the colour, the more dehydrated you are. Let that be your guide to the water fountain! This doesn’t mean you should chug 2 litres of water in a 15 mins span. Drinking water in great excess can lead to a horrible condition called hyponatremia, which can be fatal. You shouldn’t consume more than 8 ounces in a 20 mins span if you’re involved in a physically demanding fitness training regimen, like a marathon. Hydration for fitness training can also help in weight loss and increase your energy levels. Quite often we turn to caffeine to boost our energy. A cup or two a day is fine, but nothing replaces the healthy benefits of clean water. Invest in a water purifier to help rid it of unnecessary toxins like lead and spice it up by adding lemons, lime or oranges. Whatever you need to do to help yourself drink 1-2 litres a day – that’s the key ingredient to keeping hydrated and maintaining a healthy diet plan!
