Some rock songwriters think that writing rock songs is all about coming up with some great melody and lyrics, and the other parts of the song would write itself. A good song cannot be written that way. Actually, there isn't anything worse than having great melody with super lyrics in a song that is not well planned. The disparity between excellent and an average way of writing songs is making its creative parts fit together and sound well in the ears.
You can easily differentiate inexperienced songwriters from experienced ones when you listen to both of their works. Many inexperienced writers writing rock songs would over use the "super lyric" in their work so much their audience will grow tired of listening to the song over and over again. Having excellent rock music is all depended on how to creatively employ melody lines in the song.
Here is a great tip. When writing rock songs, ensure that the verse is a build-up into the chorus. Melody lines and chord structure of the verse should differ from the chorus. Certain rock songwriters see the verse to play a supportive role, and the chorus, the main substance.
The verse then serves as the build-up to the chorus. So that once you reach the chorus its like you've hit the high point of the song - the point that gets the listener "hooked" to the song. Other people writing rock songs liken the high point as experiencing a "3D" effect.
If you want to create a greater difference between the chorus and the verse, you can write the verse in a minor key and then write the chorus in a major key. Having a change of key on the final chorus can give your song some "lifting effect", particularly when the song has a catchy melody.
The lyrics of the song should also be written to convey the feel of the song. For instance, when the verse suggests a question, let the chorus provide the answer. So if you are writing rock songs, don't let the lyrics pose continuous questions for both verse and chorus else listeners would not be able relate with the mood of the song.
