Does My Child Have Adhd? Not A Question Any Parent Really Wants To Ask

Health
Asking, does my child have adhd is not something most parents want to ever have to consider. There is a stigma attached to any type of mental disorder and ADHD is no different. Children with the disorder are stigmatized and labelled, often being considered as slow or problematic. When a parent is contacted by a teacher who suggests that they have their child evaluated for ADHD, it is not uncommon for the parent to react with indignation or trepidation. Nevertheless, if the child does have the disorder, chances are the parents have noticed the characteristics and behaviors in their child for a while. In fact, this is actually one of the prerequisites to a diagnosis of ADHD in children - the child must have exhibited the symptoms for at least six months and in a number of different situations, scenarios, etc.

If your child displays behaviors and symptoms that have caused you or other adults in the child's life to wonder about whether he or she has ADHD you might want to complete and ADHD test. You will find many websites on the Internet that offer these tests free of charge. The tests are divided into three sections covering the three subtypes of ADHD. Each question has four or five possible answers and you simply check the one that you feel best describes your child's behavior. Once you have completed all three sections, which only takes minutes, you then submit the test and the results are rendered immediately. Based upon the outcome of the ADHD test you will have a better idea of how you should proceed. Of course the important thing to bear in mind is that the ADHD test is not intended to be a diagnostic tool but will help to answer the question: does my child have adhd. When you take your child for an evaluation and assessment a similar questionnaire will be given to you that you will have to complete as well. Again, that questionnaire is not a diagnostic tool but it does give the mental health expert an idea of how the child behaves.

Unfortunately there is no single test that can be administered in order to determine whether someone has Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder or not. There is no scan that can be done or blood test that can be administered. Diagnosis is based largely upon extensive observation and conclusions are drawn based upon the outcome of the observations. A number of professionals will be involved in order to answer you when you ask: does my child have adhd. These professionals will include not only the healthcare professional working with your child but also his or her teachers and doctor. A full medical history and physical examination will be necessary because there are certain illnesses and issues of a medical nature that can result in symptoms that mimic those of ADHD. The exam and medical history will be considered so as to eliminate these as possible causes for the behavior and characteristics that the child exhibits.

Remember that in order to get an answer to your question you will have to be willing to work closely with those assessing your child. You need to be forthright and honest when you are interviewed and you need to make your feelings regarding treatment options known from the outset. This will help to avoid confusion later on. More often than not a child diagnosed with ADHD will be prescribed ADHD medication such as Ritalin, which happens to be the most commonly used ADHD drug. A growing number of people are choosing alternative ways of addressing the behavioral problems associated with the disorder rather than allowing the child to be medicated. This is a personal issue and one you have every right to be involved with. If you are of the opinion that your child should be treated in a way that does not involve drugs you need to state this clearly to the healthcare professional.

ADHD and the drugs used to treat the disorder is a very controversial issue. Make sure that you investigate the drugs that are commonly used as well as other alternative treatment options that are available so that you are able to make an informed decision. Lastly, do not panic if your child is diagnosed with ADHD. Instead of seeing this as a label that will stigmatize your child, or as a bad reflection on you as a parent, see it for what it actually is: an explanation! You will finally know why your child says and does the things that he or she does and which have been inexplicable until now.
