In flight attendant training, one of the key areas you must learn is how to stay on your toes so you can react well to unexpected events. You just never know when a passenger’s cell phone is suddenly going to catch on fire. Yes, it happened. On an Airline Regional Express (Rex) flight in November 2011 from Lismore, Australia, to Syndney, a passenger’s iPhone began glowing and emitting smoke. A quick-thinking flight attendant extinguished the glow and there were no injuries. The Australia Transport Safety Board is investigating. Do you think anywhere in the flight attendant’s training there was a course on extinguishing a smoking smart phone? Flight attendant training does teach how to deal with an unruly passenger, but what about when a college student protest breaks out. In early 2011, Belgian students were taking a Ryanair flight back home from the Canary Islands when one of the students refused to pay a fee for an oversized bag. In protest, several fellow students refused to take their seats and held up the flight. The police were called and all 100 Belgian students on the flight were removed. Airline personnel were fortunate that there was no violence, and everything was handled peaceably. Remaining calm is the key, even in the face of an event that would fluster anyone. Of course, the best example of flight attendants doing their job well in an unusual situation was the famous Flight 1549 from Laguardia Airport to Charlotte, N.C. After hitting a flock of birds shortly after takeoff, pilot Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger had to put it down in the Hudson River. The cabin crew had to work quickly to get all 155 people on board off the airplane. With Sullenberger’s expert water landing and the work of the cabin crew, the incident has become one of the great stories in aviation history. Many of the passengers later gathered to honor the pilot and his crew for saving their lives. You never know what will happen from flight to flight as an attendant. The routine of air travel must never lull you into complacency. The main thing to take away from flight attendant training is to always remain alert and ready for anything. Getting you ready for unusual events and a career in the airline industry, The Airline Academy of Daytona Beach, Fla., has a commitment to provide the best training possible in high-quality facilities.
