Tijuana is the largest city in the state of Baja California. San Ysidro, the point of entry in the United States, makes crossing the border extremely easy, even on foot. Tijuana is easily reached by bus or trolley from San Diego. Lots of young college students make it into Tijuana to party since the drinking age is only 18. But, for long term relocation or retirement, at least 50,000 Americans live in Tijuana, making it one of the largest foreign populations in Mexico. According to the latest census figures, there are approximately 1.3 million people living in Tijuana also reflecting a growth with Asians and Central Americans. Notable is the Tijuana contemporary art scene. Oddly, as the drug cartels have been downturned, many of the old tunnels used for drug trafficking and many of the flop houses have been transformed into major art galleries and studios. The show piece of the city is the Tijuana Cultural Center which boasts about a million visitors a year, which makes it the most important cultural center in Baja California. Tijuana had a huge business growth in the assembly line factories but has lost much of its business, as did the United States, to the Far East, particularly China, where manual labor is much cheaper. Even though you are close to San Diego, you can live comfortably for 1/3rd to ½ the cost of living in the United States. If you are on a limited income, you would be amazed at the affordable and advanced lifestyle you can have in Tijuana. You will be able to afford domestic help, if needed or desired, at around 200 – 250 pesos a day. That’s approximately $15 – $18 U.S. dollars for a 6 – 8 hour day of work. This includes cleaning, some cooking and possibly your laundry with ironing. If you like city life, you’ll have it all in Tijuana. Museums, art galleries, cultural performances, U.S. business relocation, excellent shopping and dining on both sides of the border and the convenience of public transportation. Like the beach? Try the Playa de Tijuana, the western most part of the city where you can escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy the Pacific Ocean. Tijuana has it all. A big bustling city, excellent location just on the border of San Diego for access to great medical care, great shopping and all the culture you would expect from a big city. With such a close location to the VA hospital in San Diego, Tijuana is also a good choice for military families. FAST FACTS: 1.Tijuana has transformed into a thriving hub for tech specialists and start-up telecoms companies. 2.Retirement living communities, including assisted living, have sprung up in Tijuana. 3.Tijuana has the most tall high rise buildings in northern Mexico. New City Residential, the tallest of the high rises and consisting of 7 towers, is expected to be completed in 2012. 4.Many people live in Tijuana and work in San Diego. 5.The city has a main bus station in the eastern part of the city. There is also a small terminal downtown which serves a few Mexican bus lines and U.S.-based Greyhound Lines and Crucero USA. Another small depot is near the border, with frequent service to Ensenada. 6.The newly-rebuilt San Ysidro trolley station is located directly next to the U.S. Customs facility. It is strongly recommended that U.S. citizens living in Tijuana, apply for a Sentri Fast Pass card, which is issued by U.S. Customs and which reduces cross-border commute times drastically.
