Christmas is a magical time for all involved – for adults, it’s a time to relax, unwind and enjoy the family atmosphere, and for kids it’s a time to eat lots of food and get presents! A lot of the joy about the festive season is getting into the spirit of Christmas – this is why decorations are a must. Probably the most common and easiest part of decorating your house is with a Christmas tree, adorned with tinsel, baubels and other hanging decorations. It has been claimed that the first decorated Christmas tree appeared in 1510, when Martin Luther decorated a Christmas tree with candles to show his Children how stars twinkled in the night sky. It was the German Christmas markets that were first recognised as selling Christmas decorations for trees, often made of wax, sugar or paper. Also in Germany, tinsel was invented –first made of real silver, the shape generated by a pulling machine; it was not until the 1900s that the tinsel as we know it today was invented (you can only imagine what it was like to have real silver adorned on the tree!). It was the monarchy that popularised the idea of a Christmas tree in the UK – when the German prince, Albert, was illustrated with Queen Victoria around a large decorated tree, and thanks to their popularity and influence, this was quickly adopted by the public. In America, the actual date of the appropriation of the Christmas tree is unknown, as it is thought that many had their own customs (which may have been similar) – it was not until communications became more effective and widespread in the mid-19th century that they became commonly accepted. However, this is not to say that a Christmas tree should be the only decoration for the house – there are also other things to think of! Many houses adorn their front doors with a holly wreath to show that they are getting into the festive spirit. You’d also be hard pushed to find a house that didn’t have a bowl of sweets (usually small individually-wrapped ones) as well as walnuts and chestnuts, obviously with a nut cracker to hand. A lot of houses even go as far as to put figures of snowmen or Santa Claus in their front garden, generally illuminated (though, as I’m sure you can attest to, a lot of families go a bit too far with this!) – it can even become a bit of a neighbourhood talking point as to who has the most impressive or, ahem, gaudy, display in their garden! There are an array of wholesale Christmas decorations and cheap Christmas trees available online to ensure that your surroundings look as festive as possible.
