The mitre saw is safe, portable, accurate tool that is used to make a number of different cuts when woodworking. What makes the mitre saw unique is that the blade can be titled at different angles. Cuts that can be made by a mitre saw include: • Mitre cuts • Cross cuts • Bevel cuts • Compound angle cuts Angled or cross-cuts add a decorative flare, or are used when cutting modelling or framing to make two angled pieces fit together. By rotating the saw base and angling the blade, bevel cuts can be made. Mitre saws are relatively safe when compared to other types of saws, because the material is held in place by a fence as the saw makes its cut. The fence design makes kick back rare and adds to the precision of the cuts. Mitre saw blades vary in size – typically from between 20-to-30 centimetres. Mitre saws range in price from about £40 for a basic compound saw, to £800 for more sophisticated models with features such as a built-in table saw. The mitre saw works by pulling a spinning, circular saw blade over a piece of wood, laminate, aluminium or other metal that is held securely against a fence. Typically a 90 degree angle is cut into the wood with great precision and the two joints created are fitted together. 90 degrees is typically the factory pre-set angle on a mitre saw however other pre-sets include: • 15 degrees • 30 degrees • 45 degrees • 75 degrees Types of mitre saws include: • Manual: The blade is suspended on rollers. Used with a mitre box. The manual mitre saw if very infrequently used today. • Fixed: Features a fixed vertical pivot and a rotating cutting blade. Better for narrower cuts than are sliding mitre saws. • Compound: Features a rotating vertical pivot and a rotating cutting blade. Compound saws are preferable to fixed saws for crown moulding, because they allow you to place the material flat against the fence. • Sliding: Like a compound mitre saw, but with sliding arms for wider cuts. • Dual Compound: Like a sliding mitre saw, but with a blade and motor that can tilt left and right for greater ease-of-use and flexibility. Optional mitre saw features include: • Laser guide: Shows where the cuts will fall • Blade guard: Protects the user by covering the cutting blade. • Vacuum bag: Sucks up saw dust as the cut is made. • Electric brake: Power versus manual breaking • Spindle lock: Safety feature • Soft start: Leads to easier starting. • Trigger switch: Convenient, easy to operate. • Single bevel: The arm can tilt in only one direction. • Double bevel: the arm can tilt to either the left or the right, meaning you don’t have to tilt your work to cut your material in both directions.
