A quick history of the island reveals many countries laying their claim. Early on in the history of the area Portuguese explorers found the island and gave it a name. The name they chose was Los Barbados after the fig trees in the area. The meaning of the name is bearded one because they felt like the trees gave the appearance of having a beard. Spanish explorers discovered the island next in 1492, but did not colonize it. They only wanted to capture the inhabitants and use them as slaves. The final rule came in the form of British explorers. Englishmen landed in 1625 and claimed the island. Only the wealthy and upper social classes were allowed to have parcels of the land. This land was fertile and became a mainstay for plantations producing sugarcane, cotton, and tobacco. The British rule ended in 1966 when the country finally broke away and became independent. This has proved to be a success as their economy has grown to new heights. With a booming economy comes a well developed land and a large population.
