Both spectators and participants of martial arts many times wonder where the karate uniform came from and what special symbolism it holds, after all it is a part of a very deeply rooted and traditional sport. Truthfully, there are more types of attire related to this sport than most people realize and many of these ensembles have special meaning and symbolism, sometimes dating back to the very beginning of the sport. The name for the standard and traditional practice attire of a practitioner of karate is the karategi. This piece of common attire is made up of 3 separate parts that are pretty very well recognized, these pieces include the jacket, the lose pants, which typically have a tie in the front, and a thick belt, which comes in a variety of different shades. The belts that go with these ensembles are known as obis and there are several colors are highly significant, in fact they are probably the most symbolic part of the whole outfit, as they represent the rank and training level of the person who is wearing the outfit. The colors usually go from the lightest colors, like white or yellow, all the way to black, with special stripes to mark ranks between colors. It could probably go without saying, but the reason the karategi jacket and pants are designed to fit as loosely as they do is because martial arts put a great deal of emphasis into kicking, punching, and other acrobatic movies that require a very free range of motion. When finishing off a roundhouse kick or a flip, tight clothes would be incredibly restrictive and possibly even break or wear down quickly, for this reason a high quality, lose fitting karategi is preferred. Though not often represented this way in a traditional competition, another advantage of the belt and jackets lose fit and tie, is that it can be quickly removed when necessary to avoid overheating during an intense fight. These are just a couple of the reasons for the unique appearance of the karate uniform, but each characteristic of this ensemble was implemented with a particular purpose and function in mind.
